Doritos Extreme MSG – Dangerously Bold Indeed

doritos flavors msg Doritos Extreme MSG Dangerously Bold Indeed

I used to eat Doritos when I was younger, crazy good flavors and addicting as hell. After growing up a bit and educating myself on the dangers of MSG (monosodium glutamate), now I know why they are so damn addicting. Virtually all flavored Doritos contain MSG (no, it’s not just in Chinese food, contrary to popular belief). MSG is also linked to obesity in laboratory rodents. All one needs to do is turn your products over and read the ingredients list. Today many food items contain various forms of MSG hidden in other “harmless sounding” ingredients such as Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Autolyzed Yeast Extract or Sodium Caseinate. Please see our more complete list of hidden sources of MSG.

List of Doritos Chips that do not contain MSG:

  • DORITOS® Toasted Corn Tortilla Chips

As you can see, I only found one Doritos Chips products without MSG, those are the plain ol’ regular corn chips. Which is about the only way you can avoid MSG if you want to eat chips. In virtually 99% of flavored chips, there is MSG, even in the organic and “natural” products. Some will contain Torula Yeast or Yeast Extract, which sounds very natural and harmless, but if you do your research you will know that Tah-Dah! There is MSG in those ingredients as well. If you want to enjoy some chips nowdays, you are usually safer to eat unflavored chips, be it corn, potato, flax seed etc. A tip: buy the unflavored chips and add your own seasonings that you Know does not have MSG, like cayanne pepper, chili powder, garlic, hot sauce or dip them in a mixture of basamic vinegar and olive oil.

Almost all of the flavors that contain MSG are in the form of straight up “Monosodium Glutamate”, however there is one flavor that I saw that did not contain Monosodium glutamate persay, but does contain MSG in the form of Sodium Caseinate, that is the Last Call Jalapeno Popper Flavored Tortilla Chips. Yes, this contains MSG as well, it’s just in a different form. If you care about the dangerous health effects of MSG you may want to avoid eating these products that contain it. As always: Read the Ingredient Label!

Thank you for posting this. America is waking up to the fact that processed food is full of addictive MSG that makes you eat more and more. Natural Flavor, Spices, so many innocent sounding additives contain it and the food sellers are deceptive. The only way we’re going to change this is to post blogs like this and stop buying food with MSG. I make my own taco seasoning now b/c of MSG. You’ll feel better and weigh less w/out MSG, which is also a neurotoxin, another good reason to stay away from the stuff.

“Persay” is not a word. It is “per se”, Latin for “by itself”.

Thank you, do you have anything to add pertaining to MSG other than correcting grammar?

Wow, I had no idea I was being suckered like this. I never knew MSG was in chips, but I knew something was addictive about these chips. My favorite was Spicy Nacho Doritos and I would eat at least a bag a week. Now I realize it’s MSG that causes you to keep eating it and painful to stop. Thank you for posting this, and I will start looking for more ‘hidden’ MSG items in the things I eat.

MSG is bottled delicousness!!!!!! Anyone who says otherwise is a hippie. And besides there have been no conclusive studies that show MSG is harmful.

  10. May 27th, 2010 at 18:23 | #10

@StarvinMarv, it’s easy to just state “there have been no conclusive studies to show MSG is harmful” but without actually reading my website and reading the studies and sources provided, you’re simply revealing your lack of education. You obviously have not done any kind of research whatsoever about the subject. Keep eating the MSG bro, it’s apparently fried your brain cells real good.

Try checking out some of the published Medical studies referenced on my site. You’ll find that msg is routinely used to produce “MSG induced obsese rats” to study diseases like diabetes. there is not MSG in Last Call Jalepeno Poppers, I am allergic to this stuff and have to check EVERYTHING, so I know, and you listed corn tortilla chips in both categories. Its not addicting, so please get your stuff right.

  14. January 15th, 2011 at 09:01 | #14

    @MSG Allergic
Wrong! There are additional hidden names – but even just from the list here Last Call Jalapeno Poppers, nutrition list from their website, contains multiple products which are, contain or increase the amount of Free Glutamic Acid (the harmful component of MSG). Sodium Casinate, for starters, maltodextrin, whey powder and the ever vague “Natural Flavors”. Then we have ‘artifical flavors’, cream powder, modified cornstarch, enzymes, annatto and yeast. A veritable MSG/FGA bomb. If you don’t react to this, you are either unclear of your symptoms or not sensitive to MSG. Period.

  15. January 15th, 2011 at 09:04 | #15

And as to the not addicting comment – how much do you weigh, friend? Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that enhances food flavor. Can’t eat just one? They don’t want you to!

Not all processed food has MSG. Stop giving processed foods a bad rep.. It’s bad enough knowing there are extremists who despise anything canned.
